Our Ethos & Standards

What Guides Our Activities

We started Jumbiteammeteor after watching too many adult outdoor days split into two equally frustrating extremes: embarrassing corporate party games on a hotel lawn, or chaotic charity digging sessions where half the group stood idle leaning on spades.

Four Non-Negotiable Design Rules

1. Shared Accomplishment Over Forced Competition

We never pit sub-teams against each other to declare "winners and losers" over a plastic trophy. When three benches build three interlocking bays of a solitary bee sanctuary or calibrate a single 18-metre water aqueduct, success is shared across the whole group.

2. Access Needs Built Into the Critical Path

Accessibility is not an afterthought chair placed on the sidelines. Following ergonomic guidance from Thrive (the UK Society for Horticultural Therapy) and the Sensory Trust, every blueprint guarantees that seated, low-exertion, and neuro-inclusive stations produce essential components of the build.

3. No Unsupported Performance Claims

We do not promise that building a cedar herb box will magically increase your quarterly sales by 14% or cure organisational burnout overnight. What it reliably does is give adults 90 to 180 minutes of low-friction cooperation, shared sensory focus, and a visible piece of craftsmanship they built side by side.

4. Ecological Integrity

Every material specified in our manuals is 100% peat-free, untreated FSC/UKWAS home-grown larch, cedar, or coppiced hazel, using biodegradable hemp/jute twine and scientifically validated cavity dimensions for native invertebrates.

Standards & Field References We Draw Upon

Our open-access activity cards and facilitator checklists synthesize tested public standards from horticulture, arboriculture, and outdoor education:

  • BS 8545:2014: British Standard for young trees from nursery to independence in the landscape (governing our root-flare, staking, and mulching steps).
  • Thrive & Social Farms & Gardens: Bench heights, reach envelopes, and tool weight limits for inclusive community gardening.
  • UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS) & Xerces Society: Cavity diameter, tunnel depth, and floral quadrat protocols.
  • Charles Dowding & Garden Organic: No-dig sheet mulching and open-pollinated heritage seed saving procedures.

Who Uses Jumbiteammeteor?

Our guides are written for internal team leads, people-and-culture facilitators, public-sector department organisers, university research groups, and community park wardens hosting visiting adult volunteers.

Because every guide lists exact timber cuts, tool counts, and role splits, you can either run a session independently with your own local timber merchant or message our Sheffield workshop team to help tailor a brief.
